Sugar Mummies at the Royal Court Theatre

Digital Antics have supplied AVstumpfl’s Wings Platinum software licences as well as installation, configuration and training services to XL Video and Mesmer for the Royal Court Theatre’s production of Tanika Gupta’s funny and provocative play, Sugar Mummies, studying female sex tourism in Jamaica. The video scenic backdrops, designed by Dick Straker and Finn Ross of Mesmer, are projected from three projectors on to a 180 degree panoramic screen surrounding the back of the stage.

In addition a fourth playback channel provides a feed for ‘water’ on to the back wall behind the sand covered stage - to great tropical effect.

The Wings Platinum system provides multi-channel video playback, soft edge blending and realtime warp mesh distortion as well as taking cues from the sound departments ShowMan controller via MIDI. The ‘video department’ (the Wings control PC) is powered up by the sound operator before the show and, from that point forward, self-operates on cue.

Digital Antics’ programmer Jason Root supported XL Video’s project manager Malcolm Mellows and the team from Mesmer with programming advice and essential operational training and tips during the technical rehearsals and preview run.
